Camping Tents - Family Tents to Solo Camping Tents

I have been camping for years. I started in my back yard with some friends. We would roast marshmallows over an old camping stove (camp fires were not allowed in the city) and we would look at the star for hours. We would setup the old canvas camping tent. It was very heavy and could sleep 2, maybe 3 people. If it rained you would probably be wet in the morning because you didn't see a camping tent with a rain fly back then.

As a teen, we would go fishing and camp by a stream on the first day of trout. We were unprepared for almost everything. We had our fishing gear and a 4 man tent with no rain fly and we were missing 2 stakes. We had no firewood, saws, axe, or even an extra coat with us. We planned to eat the trout we caught, so we brought no food with us. We couldn't have been told anything to help us then, because we were teenagers and already knew it all. Boy have I learned a lot since then.

The memories were all good because all we needed was good friendship and somewhere to pitch our camping tent. I do remember coming home cold and hungry (what fish we catch could not be prepared due to the lack of firewood). As they say "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger". It was a yearly event for a while and we became pretty good at planning a camping trip.

As an adult, I have been a Boy Scout Leader for 13 years now. I have gone camping every month for years even in below freezing temperatures but I will leave that for another story. I started with a large family tent and a van full of all kinds of gear. I now go camping with an internal frame backpack and everything I need for my weekend trip is either in, or strapped on my backpack including my 2 man tent, food, clothing, first aid kit, and other essentials. I am currently considering going to a solo tent to try to bring my pack weight down by a pound or two. It is a big decision because I still like the extra space I have in my 2 man tent but I have sure come a long way from my days with the van full of gear.

How to Prepare For Disasters

You never know what can happen in the world today. Global warming has made natural disasters much more frequent and powerful. Wars are happening everywhere. Virus outbreaks are getting more frequent and dangerous as well. When it happens, there is nothing we can do to stop it but we can make sure that we prepare ourselves for it. Following the steps below will help you increase your chances of survival.

1. Plan for an Emergency
Planning is critical if you want to survive a disaster. Plan for anything that can happen to you in any situation. It's important that you know where everything is and to keep them in the same place where it is accessible. Having a small survival kit in your car is a good idea in case something happens on the road. If possible, everyone involved should know what the plan is.

2. Build a Complete First Aid Kit
I have yet to find a ready made medical kit that caters for everything but it's a good place to start your collection. Try the professional version of the emergency kit. It's still not complete but it's a very good place to start with.

Be sure you have enough to cater for everyone. There is no such things are having too much medical supply. In natural disasters or other emergencies, a lack of supply is much more common. Always buy extra bandages and antiseptic wipes for better protection.

3. First Aid Training
All that time and money to build an emergency kit won't do any good if you don't know how to use them. Courses like CPR, First Aid and AED are offered by the Red Cross but that's not all. Always improve your knowledge, learn about injury prevention, blood borne pathogens and community disaster. Knowing these skills can be lifesaving.

4. Store Emergency Water
There might be a water shortage during an emergency so better stock up. Store them in containers that are not easily punctured and replace old water with fresh water every three months. Fill up all your containers if you think that a disaster is coming soon.

Remember to have a stock of water purification tablets but be aware that they're only safe when used for short periods of time and with the correct dosage.

5. Save Up Some Food
You should have a variety of food stored in case of an emergency and remember that you might not always be able to heat up your food. If you've built your emergency kit well, you'll be able to warm up your food on a wood fire.

6. Cooking
Access to a stove may prove difficult in a emergency situation. In this case, propane stoves are a perfect companion. Having hot food to eat keeps your body nourished and helps you deal with the cold better.

7. Replacement Lights
In tornadoes and hurricanes, losing power is a very likely situation. That's why you need emergency lighting. If you're using an electric lantern, be sure to stock up on batteries. Light sticks are excellent because they can last very long. They're fairly cheap and you can get them in varying lengths of hours and different colors. Stock up several of them.

8. Emergency Tool Kit
In an emergency situation, you might need some tools for whatever tasks comes your way. You might need to dig of hole, cut wood, fix the camp stove or tons of other stuff. A multi-tool is always handy so make sure you have that.

9. Emergency Radio
To keep up-to-date with the news and weather reports in a natural disaster emergency you need a radio. It's important that an emergency radio can still play even without power e.g. a wind-up radio.

10. Guides
There are a lot of useful tips you can get from survival guides. Check with other guides to see if the information has at least some truth in it. Pay particular on the part about foraging. There are many deaths as a result of eating poisonous food. Mushrooms, in particular, have been responsible for thousands of deaths through the years. Foraging and survival guides can help give you that extra edge.

Where your life is concerned, it's always better to be safe than sorry. To be prepared may take some work but it's the best way to make sure you and your family come out safe in an emergency.

Camping Cots - Yard Sale Treasure

Have you ever heard the phrase "someone's junk is someone else's treasure"? Yard sales are great places to find inexpensive camping supplies. You can really stock up on flashlights, eating and cooking utensils, chairs or if your lucky an old lantern. Sometimes you find a real treasure like an air mattress or a camping cot.

A few years ago the wife and I were out driving around and she suggested that we should hit some garage sales. I reluctantly said yes. I used to think garage sales were all junk. I have enough of my own junk why buy someone else's? So we are driving around and we are going through garage after garage and then she comes up to me and says she has something to show me. She points to these two old camping cots! I'm thinking to myself these are about $5-$10 a piece, I am not paying a penny over $4. She tells me that these camping cots, that are in pretty good shape are only a $1 a piece! Sold! I have never spent a better $2 in all my life. They have been a life saver. I believe you should never camp without a camping cot. Air mattresses are good but they deflate sometimes and get holes, but camping cots you just unfold and go. We still have those old camping cots and still use them. we are planning on getting another set pretty soon because these are on their last leg but I think I have gotten my dollars worth. They are by far the best garage sale buy I have ever made.

JBuds J2 Premium Hi-Fi Noise Isolating Earbuds Review

I bought JBuds J2 Premium Hi-Fi Noise Isolating Earbuds last month for work because building across ours was being repaired.  The sound of the jackhammer is really something and I can't concentrate at work.  Added to that is that the loud noise is painful to the ear.  When I go home, I always felt like I was going deaf.  All I really needed is something that will silence the jackhammer.

You have to try it to believe that it will really eliminate the noise outside.  I put it in my ear and it's like I'm in a very quiet neighborhood.  Even the chit chat and laughter of people a few meters away from me are inaudible to me.  It's a very good pair of earbuds. 

I'm glad that it comes in 3 sizes.  I have a very small opening in my ears so I appreciate that they come in small size.  The smallest sizes fit perfectly.  Aside keeping the sounds of the jackhammer out, these earbuds also give incredibly beautiful sounds.  I have never experienced fullness of sound until I used it.  It is such a wonderful experience listening to the music with the clearest sound and highest quality.

The plug is so easy to be unplugged because it is not angled.  I hope the next time they manufacture it that there will be something that will keep the wire from being unplugged from the player.  Aside from this small thing, I don't see anything I can complain about.  JBuds J2 Premium Hi-Fi Noise Isolating Earbuds is such a good buy.

How Do Campers Protect Their Children?

Oh yes you have! Suddenly, "Where's Bobby?" You instantly realize that he is not where he is supposed to be--where you told him to stay! Little kids, and even older ones, just don't behave like they used to. Has anyone noticed that?

Since corporeal punishment of children has departed the scene, parents are left with the ominous job of establishing rules for their kids to follow using verbal communication techniques, as apposed to grandpa's "back-of-the-hand" coersion.

Kids learn how to manipulate parents from day one. This incredible talent allows them to keep stretching the leash, not realizing that parents know best. If they only had the ability at a very early age to understand why parents are so protective of them, parents could avoid headaches, ulcers, and nervous breakdowns caused by worry. But, that does not happen!

The demand for parents to watch and protect their children reaches the highest priority when there are no physical barriers, like your backyard fence, to keep them corralled.

Well then, what do you do to keep track of your children the most efficient and safest way in an outdoor camping environment? It's a little trickier out in the open countryside. You agree?

Short of roping them to a tree, parents just have to become sneaky and devious so as not to spoil their kid's new found freedom adventures. We wouldn't want to do that, would we? There are some sneaky, gentle, egregious, tearful, divine (call it what you want) ways to accomplish the mission, and go home without incident.

1. Homespun yarn to clothe the innocent:

Especially the first time that this child has ever been camping, an adult with camping experience should spend time explaining what to expect when they arrive at the campsite.

Choose from the list of things that seem important, and that you can relate to safety and protection. Attention span of small children is short, so don't dabble around. Get to the point quick. Review the rules with all the other kids as well.

2. Something everyone forgets:

One technique for insuring the return of lost children safely is not so obvious. Sewing a cloth label (having the name, address, and phone number) to the garment that the child will be wearing while camping is not a new idea, and it's a chore to do.

Do it for each child anyway. This is especially important if the child is found by strangers, is injured, and not responding.

3. Knowledge will save them:

Make every effort to teach and instruct the children of teachable age "direction finding" wherever they are. If it is 7:00 PM, the sun is in the west sky. Moss accumulates on the north side of tree trunks. And you know what I mean, right?

Show them how to use a compass and read a map. Even better, instruct them on using a GPS device, and let them carry one. If they just won't learn, then go ahead and tie them to a tree.

4. Nighttime is not necessarily sleep time:

Darkness hides many of the visual reference points that a child uses to find home base. It's true, they can use a flashlight to go to the bathroom and sneak up on their brother in the other tent. More worrisome are the "hide and seek" games that are especially attractive to children when in the woods.

Nighttime techniques to keep track of the kids:

o Attach fluorescent wrist or arm bands--a different color for each child.

o Have them wear sneakers with the flickering lights built into the shoe.

o Place a red or colored lantern on the table so that the child knows that it is home base.

o Attach a blinking light to the clothes or belts -- a different color for each kid.

o Recognize each kid by the color of light you see.

o Put a whistle in their pocket to use if he or she feels lost or disoriented.

o Have them carry a small pocket flashlight that can be seen for a mile.

o Give older children a compass to carry and use on night trails.

o Dress them in bright light colored clothing -- it reflects light better at night.

o Reinforce "mom's" rule - buddy teams of 2 or more anytime.

5. Survival techniques aren't just for adults:

Stories about lost children while camping, hiking, or backpacking are common. If you don't teach your children survival techniques, no one else will. Well, there are a few exceptions.

Go on the trails with them and show them how to use the techniques, like build a shelter, stay on or close to the trail, keep warm, find water or food, place markers on trails, sensible direction choices, signaling, and etc.

6. After action reports:(my military background)

How do you ever know how much your child has learned, and retained in memory, unless you ask them? It will clue you in on what you thought they had learned, but hadn't. Repeating the process with them then becomes well worth it.

A good time to get into this is on the drive home from camping. Stuck with the boring ride home, your questions are a welcome distraction (that is unless they have a hand held video game unit).

7. Why didn't you think of this:

Kids sometimes learn better from other kids than from a bossy parent. Have you ever witnessed someone calling you bossy, when all you were trying to do was encourage them to learn? The stimulus to learn often stems from sibling rivalry and peer pressure. That is often overlooked.

To get around this, ask the older child or teenager that does know the actual facts and strategies, to teach the smaller ones.

Giving the older one the responsibility of doing this, signals trust by the parent and confidence in his or her abilities to do that. And when you get home, he will be more than happy to carry out the garbage. Right?

The camping experience that the child takes home with him or her is not about the wildlife they observed, nor about the natural wonders of nature. It is about how enjoyable it was to see how clumsy dad is at putting up a tent, and how mom or grandpa always burn the toast over the campfire.

Yet, underneath it all, the child mentally absorbs what everybody does and says, knowing all along that he or she felt safe, comfortable, and protected. Of course, thoughts about how they got themselves untied from the tree will also be remembered.
