Choosing a Camping Lantern

When you go camping you will need a camping lantern , camping stove and a camping cot as well as a flash light.

All campers will need some type of lantern gas, battery, or candle. Each one has there pros and cons. To find out which will work for you here are a few tips.

Gas lanterns
give off bright light but are noisy and will be the most expensive of all lanterns to operate. You will have to pack extra propane bottles The older liquid gas lanterns give off just as much light but you will have to refill the tank with liquid gas and this can be messy as well as dangerous if you are not careful. Both types of lanterns use mantels so be sure to carry extras.

Battery lanterns
give of plenty of light but however you will need to have spare batteries or if it is a rechargeable style you will need some way to recharge it. The rechargeable lanterns do not last as long as a battery type of lantern and the lighting tends to be a bit duller. The rechargeable lanterns can be recharged with you car by plugging into the cigarette lighter on some models.

Candles
will are the most cost effective but you have to be very careful not to start a fire with them. They also do not through a very strong light and they are subject to going out in a breeze.

The best lantern to use inside a tent is a battery style. But they do not work well in colder climates as the batteries tend to run down faster due to the cold..

Be sure the lantern you buy is weather proof. If you are camping in colder weather the gas type of lanterns would be your best choice because not only do they give of a bright light they also give off a fair amount of heat. Never use the gas lanterns in the tent. Should the lantern get knocked over or get too close to flammable materials it could start a fire.

If you are using a gas lantern in the rain you have to be careful because the glass globe can break if a lot of water gets on it. A single mantle in a lantern gives off about 300 watts of light. Be aware that the glass globe of all gas and propane lanterns get extremely hot and can give you a serious burn.

If you are going to use candles you will have to be very careful that you do not start a fire. Rememer that the hot wax of the candle can burn you if you get it on your skin. Never leave a candle that is burning in your tent unattended and never fall asleep with a burning candle or a burning lantern in your tent.

Many camping trips have been ruined by a hot lantern or a burning candle. Now matter which type of lantern you use always play safe Never store a hot gas lantern near any flammable materials or leave any open flames unattended.

Be sure the flashlight you purchase is waterproof, corrosion resistant and has a scratch resistant lens. Look for one that has an adjustable beam and can be free standing which frees up your hands to do other things.

Have a flashlight for each camper in your group. The plastic type are great for the kids and they only cost a dollar or so. Never let the kids wander around at night as unless they've been taught not to shine their flashlight beams into other camping sites which can upset the other campers.

Be sure that the flashlights are shock proof. Many a flashlight has been broke because the kids accedently dropped it on the ground. If you are walking at night never shine your flash light at any moving vehicles. Your light may blind the driver and which could cause an accident.

Important Fundamentals Of Camping Equipment

No other holiday requires as much planning and packing as camping does. In conventional locations, if you miss out on something, you can always step out to the nearest store to pick it up. With camping however, you need to ensure you have all the necessary camping equipment and supplies ready before you head out. It is always recommended that you prepare a checklist even if you are an experienced camper so you can keep a track of what you have and what you may need to purchase for your trip.

Camping equipment is a broad term that applies to camping supplies required during camping trips. Some who may favor roughing it out may opt for very basic things, which are enough to get by especially if they have trekking and backpacking included in the schedule. Others who have longer stays planned with family or children may require more equipment and supplies to see them through till they return.

Some of the basic things which form an essential part of camping equipment are a cooking stove, cookware, tents, sleeping bags, insect repellants, flashlights with extra batteries, lanterns and first aid kits. Depending on the duration of the trip and the level of comfort desired you could always add on more .It is advised to review the weather conditions at the camp site and be prepared in case of any eventualities.

Waterproof tents are an absolute must especially if you are not traveling in a trailer or a camper and the camping location is prone to spells of rain or even light drizzles. The idea of camping is to enjoy the trip with friends and families and if having a good time is the objective then you should also be prepared with whatever camping equipment is necessary to ensure nature or anything else does not get too much of a chance to spoil your plans.

You will need good protective clothing, spacious tents to accommodate everyone and comfortable sleeping bags to ensure everyone gets a good nights rest. Coolers may be carried along if you wish to keep certain food or drinks cold especially if the weather is warm. Stoves or outdoor grills will be required if you are planning on doing quite a bit of cooking. You will also need enough cooking and serving utensils. If you have a trailer, carrying good drinking water along with the camping equipment is a good idea especially with children, as they tend to catch infections or other ailments pretty fast.

Some well-established campsites these days have electricity, shops which sell camping equipment and supplies and even entertainment centers with TV's and video games for those who still prefer urban forms of entertainment as opposed to what nature has to offer. The joy of camping is in enjoying the ruggedness and making do without material comforts. People should make the best of the opportunity when heading out into the great outdoors and see it as a way of getting away from the humdrum of stressful city living and enjoying being one with nature once in a while.

Coleman Lantern Review

Coleman have been making lanterns since 1901, and have made over 50 million since then. Looking for great long lasting lanterns starts with Coleman. They have a great variety of lanterns from LED, propane, and even remote controlled. Every Coleman lantern can provide you light for an extensive amounts of time, even the ones that are battery powered.

LED Coleman Lantern

The LED lantern is a great all around light source. Unlike normal battery powered lanterns, the LED light bulb is practically indestructible. The LED bulb offers a pure white light, and is resistant to shocks and vibrations.

What exactly is an LED? Stands for light emitting diode. To keep it as simple as possible, a diode acts as a semi conductor that only allows the passage of electrical current in one direction. This means a more concentrated direct flow of light. Originally used as little red indicator lights, soon grew to be used in more applications. The color of the light expanded as wel to blue and white light.

Coleman 8D Family Size LED Lantern is great to get started with. This Coleman lantern will run for 66 hours on low, and 32 hours on high. This specific lantern has a nightlight setting which would be perfect for late night reading.

Propane Coleman Lantern

If you are looking for a great easy to use fuel based lantern, then the Coleman One-Mantle Compact Propane Lantern is a great way to go. The great thing about the Coleman propane lantern is the light flexibility. A dimming feature allows you to fully adjust how much light you want, which makes this a personal favorite for most. You can also get the two mantel propane lantern.

Remote Controlled Coleman Lantern

Now this is a truly remarkable lantern that you will have a lot of fun with. Coleman Full-Size Retro Control Remote Battery Powered can be remote controlled from 40 feet away. Also has the nightlight feature, giving this lantern 3 settings that can all be controlled from the remote.

The remote will rotate through all the settings at the press of one button. This makes it easy to use if you are looking for a little nightlight that you don't have to get up to turn on and off. The only real downside is that the lantern does get pretty heavy requiring 8D batteries. Also since it does use a fluorescent bulb, don't expect light nearly as intense as the LED lantern.

Whichever Coleman lantern you choose to go with you can expect to see long lasting good quality lanterns. Whether you are looking for an indoor or an outdoor light source, Coleman has a great diversity.

Tallywhacker Bushbats and the Doo-Doo Eating Dog

One weekend about 15 or so years ago, (my God, has it been that long?) my cousin Jeff and I loaded up his son Jason, aged ten, and my son Sean aged eight, along with Jeff's black labrador retriever named Sam and off we went to four-wheel it through the marshy bottoms to camp out on Jeff's 43 acres of land that lies on both sides of the South Sulphur River.

A few years later, we built a cabin that we still go camping at every year, but in those days our campsite consisted pretty much of tents, tarps and a wooden electrical cable spool that we used as a table. Anyway, we arrived shortly before dark on a Friday evening and just got our tents set up before it was time to light our campfire and turn on a couple of Coleman lanterns. Somewhere not long after setting up the tents and about half-way through a bottle of Wild Turkey, Jeff decided to have a bit of fun with the boys, so he gathered them around the campfire and told them to be on the lookout for really evil creatures called "Tallywhacker Bush Bats" which were notoriously thick in the very woods where we were camping.

"Why are they called Tallywhacker Bush Bats?" asked Jason. Doing a wonderful job of keeping a straight face, Jeff answered, "because they hide in the bushes where you can't see them, and when you go to use the bathroom, they pounce on your tallywhacker and bite down on it with razor sharp fangs and then suck all the blood out of you." Now Jason and Sean both snickered and laughed when they heard this preposterous description, but when Jeff and I kept our faces more or less straight, they began to have second thoughts. "There's no such thing as a tallywhacker bush bat . . . . is there?" "Are you SURE?" "Have you ever seen any?" Soon, we had them going. "What do they look like", they asked. "Well," Jeff answered, "they aren't really all that big, just about the size of a big squirrel, which makes it easier for them to hide in the bushes. But even though they aren't really big, they have long snouts, just big enough to swallow your whole tally whacker, and sharp teeth about 2 inches long that clamp down where you can't get loose while they suck the blood out of you.". At this point, they were true, saucer-eyed believers, although I think I almost blew the whole thing when I added, "most people are really scared of them, but there are some local guys that like to catch them and take their teeth out and make pets out of them for some reason."

Somehow, Jeff managed to keep from choking on a big gulp of the Wild Turkey he had been in the process of swigging down and he quickly added, "the main thing is, boys, don't go where it's too dark, because they hate bright light and love to lurk in the dark until some poor unsuspecting guy comes along and pulls out his tallywhacker." I don't think we ever had a brighter campfire than the one those boys kept adding wood to all night long! And I don't think that either one of them ventured more than 10-15 steps from the campfire to relieve themselves of all the cokes they drank. To make it worse, whenever one did go and the other wasn't looking or going at the same time, we tossed a few sticks out in the bushes to make them jump. And of course, half the time that Jeff and I had to heed nature's call, we rattled the brush and came scampering back, claiming breathlessly to have narrowly escaped a close call.

Finally, when all the hot dogs and chili had been eaten and the last of the Wild Turkey had finished off the last of Jeff's and my brain cells, we headed off to our tents, my son Sean clutching to my trouser leg and shining the flashlight to and fro at every imagined shadow and sound until we got in the tent. Nearby, Jeff and Jason were repeating pretty much the same ritual, and then I heard Jeff say, "Have you seen Sam, Jason? Oh crap, I hope he hasn't gone down to the river and gotten all muddy. SAM. SAAAAAAAAM. HERE SAM! Ah, there he comes, and he looks dry. Good dog, good dog, come on in the tent and keep us warm, boy." For a few moments, there was silence.

Then Jeff said, "Jason, did you crap in your pants? Sheweee, that smells horrible!" "No, Dad, it wasn’t me, I promise" "Well I didn't do it, and it smells like pure sh__!" "Me either, Dad, it must be Sam", and then a few seconds later, "Man, it’s getting worse!" At that point, the flashlight came on in their tent, and Jeff commenced to cussing, "Sam you stupid blankety-blank dog, you’ve got crap all over you!" "Look, Dad it's all on his jaws - he's been eating somebody's crap and it looks just like that chili you made". "Yeah, well it smells like sh__, and now it's all over our damn sleeping bags! Who in the hell was the idiot that took a dump close to camp"? My son Sean started snickering, and pointing to himself, and I, thinking about how close he likely had been to the campfire when he took a poop due to our stories of the Tally Whacker Bush Bats, started laughing. Then Sean started laughing, and soon Sean and I were both roaring with laughter, which didn’t help Jeff or Jason’s moods while they got up in the cold night air and tried to clean off their sleeping bags as best they could, all the time cussing and bitching in the direction of our tent.

Finally I just couldn't resist yelling back, "Hey, I can't help it if you have a sh__ eating dog!" And Sean added, "yeah, and don't let one of those bush bats get you while you're cleaning all the poop off!"

Backyard Camp Out - Easy Dinner Recipes and Dinner Ideas For Family Fun

When the kids are little or time or money is short, try a backyard camp out for an easy recipe for great family fun. All you need are some willing campers, a tent, some bedding and a spirit of adventure.

Step 1) Acquire a tent. Hopefully there's one in the garage and you can find it. If not, you can ask your friends if you can borrow one, or you can go to the local thrift store and see if you can score a bargain. Alternately you can hit the discount stores, tents should be in the sporting goods section and shouldn't cost a lot of money.

Step 2) Gather supplies. We need sleeping bags or bedding and pillows for each camper. We need at least one flashlight and hopefully a battery operated lantern to light our tent. Some cards and games might be fun too.

Step 3) Find a flat and dry area of your yard and pitch your tent. This can be the funniest part of this whole procedure. Generally, modern tents come with folded stakes that unfold and stamp into each other. These poles are threaded into channels sown on the outside of the tent, then the ends are held in place in the ground with stakes. There is usually a rain shield that covers the whole assembly in case of, you guessed it, rain. If your tent is older, you're on your own for assembly.

Step 4) Food and drink are critical to the success of this mission. Plan to cook your meal outside. See the easy recipe ideas below.

Step 5) Light the grill or BBQ fire and play some games with the kids. Lawn darts, the non-lethal kind are good, as is frisbee.

Step 6) Cook dinner and eat. Plan some dessert too. Roast marshmallows over the fire or grill some peaches and drizzle with maple syrup then top with ice cream.

Step 7) Play games with the kids after dinner. Tell stories. When it gets dark, tell scary stories passing around the flashlight. Fortunately, if it get's too scary, the house is nearby.

Step 8) This is the hard part, get comfortable, go to sleep and stay our in the tent until morning. Take the flashlight if you need to make an indoor privy visit. And the good news about backyard camping is that if it gets too uncomfortable, you can always go inside and go to bed. The best part is the time together, not the snoring in the tent part.

Shedding Light on Camping Accommodations

While a certain percentage of avid campers prefer to see by the light of a wood fire and a simple flashlight, there are dozens of choices when it comes to lighting the way around an outdoor site. Some of these alternatives involve electricity, while others call for bringing along a kerosene lamp or propane for such items as a cook stove.

Should the camper decide to stay with a simpler plan, such as a combination of wood fire and fuel-driven lamps, preparations will include stocking up on wood, liquid fuel and wicks for the lamps. As a backup plan or alternative, many campers who rely on natural fuels for light also take along battery-powered flashlights and lanterns for those wet nights and quick trips away from the campsite.

But if the climate you are traveling to calls for more comfort than wood and fuel lamps can provide, it may be necessary to make arrangements for a campsite with electricity. When campers move beyond the more "primitive" level of tent camping and open fires, they often arrive at their outdoor destination in a truck-mounted camper or self-contained motor home. Connecting to electrical service at the campsite provides power for cooking, indoor lighting, recharging battery-powered items and much more. (While some campers and RVs may have electric heat, campers are often warmed by bottled LP gas.)

With most campgrounds it will be necessary to take a few minutes for booking the electric campsite, as the number of RV campers has gone through an amazing growth in recent years. A few minutes spent confirming that a site with electricity will be waiting at the other end of the trip will eliminate most of the stress that comes with making a home away from home. As the family settles in at their "electric" campsite, a number of amenities become available. One family member may prepare a meal on an electric stove or on a range supplied by the same bottled LP gas that serves the camper's heater. Other family members can turn on a chair-side or bedside electric lamp and read, just as they would at home.

Campers and equipment companies have added another option to the list of ways to shed light on your campsite. In some ways, this new method is a return to the natural sources such as wood. When the sun shines, campers now have the option of operating solar-powered accessories for hours. A unique item known as the photovoltaic cell gathers the sun's energy and stores it in rechargeable batteries. The best thing about this method: the batteries are often lighter and less bulky than batteries used for traditional flashlights and lanterns because the bulbs require less power.

No matter how you choose to light your way when camping, plan for two methods of lighting. The choices are there!

Choosing the Best Coleman Tents

Coleman Company, Inc. is well-known American company that specializes in outdoor recreation products. Throughout its history, Coleman has produced a wide variety of equipment primarily aimed at the camping and recreational markets. There are many styles to choose from, but for the purpose of selecting a family camping tent that will cover the most popular and the easiest to find.

The Coleman Tent is a collapsible portable shelter of fabric that stretched and used for camping outdoors or as a temporary building. Coleman is proud of their heritage as a company full of innovative ideas. These tents allow for more head room than most styles, but do slope inward on the sides.

Coleman Tent are great for windy conditions because of their frame strength which was started by W.C. Coleman himself selling lanterns with mantles instead of wicks that emitted brighter white light, and progressed through to the introduction of plastic coolers and the distribution of a million portable pocket stoves. There are a variety of different tents designed for different situations. It is important to consider potential situations when choosing a tent, for some tents are designed to endure exhausting levels of heat, or water, or cold, and snow. Coleman Tents also come in various sizes and are designed for a certain number of people. Although it may be possible to fit more people than recommended, it's important to note that it may sacrifice comfort and durability of the product.

Coleman Tent has room to sleep, store and live comfortably. Once have stored your belongings, the living area can be used as such and is extremely practical. Coleman Tent is intended for car camping or large family camping when weight is not a concern. They are great for larger families or extended camping trips where more space would be nice.

They are heavier because of the extra fabric and more difficult to assemble, but are great when space is needed. If visiting standard campgrounds and parks with your family most of the time, the most vital factors in choosing the right tent will be space and comfort, as well as aeration and extra features. The large bedroom will accommodate four people and the smaller bedroom is suitable for two. This tent is ideal for families and if you don't need two bedrooms you can remove a bedroom to give yourselves a larger living area.

These tents don't have much head space because of the hostile slope of the walls, but they do save a lot of weight and space when in the bag. These are typically used for backpacking tents where space and weight is important. These tents are not as wind resistant, but are great for mild weather camping.

Think about the number of people who will be staying in the tent as well as any other camping gear or personal items that need to store inside it. When choosing a family camping tent, you will want to have enough space for everyone to live comfortably, particularly on unmitigated camping trips.

Alternative Fuels For Your Car

So many different types of alternative fuels are being developed, that it's a very exciting time, somewhat like it must have been when the many varieties of crude cameras were being developed in the 19th century.

The primary goal is to produce fewer emissions, which not only are harmful to the air we breathe, but are also screwing up the planet in general. Another major goal is to reduce our dependence on oil, which is rapidly being depleted, partially resulting in unfathomable price hikes. Plus, the less we are dependent on foreign sources of oil, the better, for painfully obvious reasons.

In addition to hybrid cars, which use a combination of a gasoline engine with an electric motor powered by a battery, there are also flex-fuel vehicles, bi-fuel vehicles and converted vehicles which all allow you to use some form of alternative fuel, either alone or in combination with gasoline or diesel. Even plug-in electric hybrids are being developed which can use gasoline mixed with other fuels as a back-up source to electricity.

Types of alternative fuels used in cars include electricity, biodiesel, natural gas (methane), ethanol, methanol (wood alcohol), propane, hydrogen gas, and p-series fuels.

Biodiesel can be combined with petroleum diesel. Biodiesel is made from animal fats or vegetable oil, so we can produce it right here in the United States. It burns cleaner than pure diesel.

Electricity can come from fuel cells or a battery, and can be combined with gasoline for the most common hybrid car. There are all-electric cars, plug-in hybrids (which can acquire electricity from an outlet in your garage), or fuel cell cars.

Ethanol, otherwise known as E85, is usually combined with regular gasoline in various percentages. This is alcohol based and made from biomass or grains, such as wheat or corn. Since we can easily produce that, it frees us from foreign dependence on oil. It also burns cleaner. Flex-fuel vehicles that use 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline are already out there on the roads in several models.

Methanol was being combined with gasoline, but may be used in fuel-cell cars in the future. It comes from coal.

Natural gas, or methane, can power certain cars, which can run on either natural gas or gasoline, depending on what is available. It can be gotten from landfills, natural gas fields, or as a byproduct of oil drilling or coal mining. It must be compressed or liquefied to use in an automobile. It is possible to have bi-fuel vehicles, which run on regular gasoline or natural gas.

P-Series fuels are clear and can be used alone or combined with gasoline.

Hydrogen as fuel for cars is still in development. Hydrogen comes from water, which is still plentiful on this earth. It can be harnessed from petroleum refining in the form of natural gas, or it can come from running electricity through water. It must be converted to liquid or highly compressed to store it in the car, so it looks like it will be used mainly to power fuel cells in electric vehicles. It can also be mixed with natural gas for certain engines.

We usually think of propane as a fuel for camping lanterns and stoves, but it can also be used to power a car. It is a byproduct of natural gas and crude oil refining.

The more that these alternative fuels are used, the more that standard gasoline vehicles will stand out for their foul, smelly exhaust, until it will become positively embarrassing, (not to mention prohibitively expensive), to continue driving around harming the environment with one. Let's hope that time comes soon.

Tips on How to Have a Great RV Camping Experience

If it's your family's first outdoor adventure and you want to have a great time without experiencing the complications of tent camping then it is a good idea to go for an RV camping trip.

To make sure that your family gets to have a great time during your RV camping trip, here are a few tips you can follow.

First tip: create a checklist. Just like in tent camping, you should avoid the "I forgot" scenarios by creating a checklist that will give you an overview of the things you need to bring and pack. No, it doesn't mean you have to squeeze the entire house in the luggage compartment in your RV. Just be sure you bring the essentials and you won't have a problem.

Here is an example of a comprehensive checklist which you can use and then just add in other personal items that you need.

For the camping gears, you need to pack in a lantern, fuel, matches, compass and maps, comfortable chairs for lounging outdoors, foldable chairs and tables, extra batteries, flashlight, and rope.

Don't forget to list your RV needs like a fire extinguisher, a set of tools for small home repair, some wood blocks for the levelling process, indoor heaters and a portable generator.

Under the category of eating and food preparation, list meal ingredients, food, drinking water, cook stove and fuel, table, folding chairs, cookware, cooking and eating utensils, can opener, coolers, and ice.

What you'll need for comfortable sleep, pack in inflatable mattresses with pump, cots, pillow, blankets and sleeping bags.

For your personal items, you need to have your first aid kit, clothing, rain gear, toiletries, camera and film, and insect repellent.

Second tip: pick a nice RV camping park. There are many RV campsites with facilities and amenities that will make your stay fun and convenient. It is also smart to pick a park that not only gives you a nice site to camp on but also offers a variety of great outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, boating, white water rafting, and biking to make sure none in the family gets bored.

Third tip: create wonderful and exciting camping activities for you and your family. Remember one of the purposes of any family camping trip is family bonding time. Together, you can engage in activities that the park has to offer together, go hiking and see spectacular sights. You can also play family fun games back in your camp spot. This will surely make your RV camping trip even more memorable.

Fourth tip: create sumptuous meals for you and your family to feast on. So that cooking does not take your whole day, it is best to prepare the ingredients at home by measuring them and putting them in resealable plastic bags with labels to make cooking easier and faster. It is also smart if you half cook meat, potatoes and other food to save cooking time. Be sure to prepare meals that are loved by the whole family and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Fifth tip: create a comfortable sleeping ambience for your family. All's well that ends well. After a whole day of fun but exhausting activities, your family needs to get a good night's rest. Be sure to heat up your sleeping area toasty warm with a reliable Coleman heater like the Coleman SportCat Catalytic Heater and have your family sleep in comfortable sleeping bags or air mattresses.

RV camping which is a deviation from regular camping trip is a great way to spend time with your family. You and your family can get close to the nature and yet not be too far away from the comfort and conveniences of a homey ambience. Bringing an RV to a campsite is like having home away from home.

Emergency Lanterns - The Benefits of Including an LED Light Source in Your Emergency Kit

There are so many situations that can turn into an emergency it is impossible to describe each in detail but, the tools and supplies needed to be able to react appropriately to most emergencies can be collected in preparation for an emergency. It is critical to have access to an emergency lantern during an emergency as this can make the difference between life and death.

Many times an emergency creates a life and death situation making the situation a medical emergency. If there is not the availability of an emergency lantern or emergency light source, the medical situation will be significantly compromised. Having all the medical supplies in the world won’t make any difference if it is impossible to see what is going on to assess the situation. When darkness compromises the assessment of injuries the ability to apply emergency medical procedures is also compromised.

The same is true for search and rescue operations. It is almost impossible to conduct emergency rescue procedures in the dark. Many times dealing with the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster means looking for survivors at night or in the darkness caused by searching underground or through rubble piles. Being able to see what you are dealing with increases the degree of safety for the rescuers and victims.

Emergency action plans are an excellent way to plan for the unknown and to be prepared to respond efficiently as soon as possible. An emergency plan includes putting together lists of supplies and tools that will help in the event of a disaster. When the list is final, the items should be collected or purchased and stored in an accessible place. Appropriate emergency lighting should be on everyone’s emergency planning list. To be able to determine the suitability of emergency lanterns, decisions need to be made after learning about and comprehending the pros and cons of the variety of emergency lanterns on the market as there are many emergency lantern options to consider.

Emergency lanterns come in a variety of models and types including: 12 LED light battery, 20 LED lantern battery, Windup LED, lantern and radio combinations, lantern, radio and television combinations, kerosene lanterns, and solar powered lantern etc. Each of these types of emergency lanterns has individual strengths, benefits and limitations such as:

LED emergency lanterns are super bright and provide intense light for close-up work as well as useful for distributing light into the distance.

Battery powered emergency lanterns can be bought with rechargeable batteries.
Windup or crank emergency lanterns can be used when any source of power is unavailable.

Solar emergency lanterns can be powered up by the sun without the use of batteries. Most come with an adaptor for a car or home.

An emergency lantern can be used at times other than emergencies making them a more flexible resource to have around. If using an emergency light for something other than and emergency, ensure when you put it back after use that you have recharged batters, solar panels and/or replaced low batteries.

Camping Lanterns Guide: Backpacking And Camping Lantern Tips.

What kind of camping lanterns best fit your outdoor needs? Do you need light weight for backpacking, or is maximum light more important?

Camping lanterns have been around for quite a while, especially fuel lanterns like kerosene and gas lanterns. LED lanterns, rechargeable lanterns or electric lanterns, butane lanterns, propane lanterns, battery lanterns and candle lanterns are newer to the scene though. All of them being different they have advantages and disadvantages...

If you already have a camping stove or other camping equipment that uses fuel consider getting a lantern that uses the same type of fuel so you won't have to remember to bring both fuels and you'll use less space too. Although some dual-fuel Coleman lanterns will burn both white gas or unleaded gasoline (check to be sure).

Camping lanterns that burn fuel can come with either glass globes or metal mesh globes. The advantage to glass is that it lets more light through, but since it's glass it is fragile. Metal mesh globes are much tougher than glass but they do block some of the light.

When you buy a camping lantern make sure to get extra mantles, fuel, bulbs, and/or batteries, it's not much fun needing a lantern part in the middle-of-nowhere and not being able to get it when you need it.

Candle lanterns can be lightweight at 3.7 ounces, but you may not want to use them as a camping lantern as their light output leaves something to be desired at 1 to 1.5 watts. They're pretty much a candle with a protective sheath to help prevent the flame from blowing out in the wind and keep things a little safer by avoiding an open flame. Another drawback... the sheath enclosure also makes it more difficult to roast marshmallows over your lantern. ;-)

I recommend going flameless especially inside your tent. It doesn't take much to start a fire with a high intensity heat source. Falling asleep and tipping your camping lantern over is all it takes to put your life in serious jeopardy. There are a lot of great battery lanterns, LED lanterns and rechargeable lanterns available. Play it smart.

While great LED lanterns put out a good amount of light I haven't found one yet that can match the light output of well-designed flame camping lanterns. If you need a lot of light in a local outdoor area have a look at butane, propane, and gas lanterns. Some of these lanterns crank out up to 235 watts of light! That's more light than most people use to light a room at home. One of the butane lanterns even allows you to focus the light more intensely with reflectors and another is refillable with lighter fluid helping to make it great for...

Camping Equipment: What You Need to Supply a Basic Campsite

If you are interested in taking a camping trip, there are basic pieces of camping equipment that you will make certain that you have on hand. By making certain that you do have these items of camping equipment on hand when you take off on your outdoor adventure, you will be ready to have an enjoyable and exciting experience.

Here’s a handy list of camping equipment that you can pull together for you in planning your next camping trip. You will see that these are the basic absolutes that you need when camping.

Unless you are using a camper or trailer, you will need a tent. Make sure that you have a tent that is large enough for your family or others that will be joining you on your trip. It is always wise to select a tent that is a couple people larger than your family size. Even large tents can seem confining and you want to have as much space to maneuver as possible.

Some people prefer to have two tents and have the kids stay in their own tent. Don’t forget the tent poles and tent stakes or the tent won’t do you much good. It is amazing how many people actually leave these items behind when they are packing for a campiang excursion.

In addition to the tent, you will need a ground cloth or a tarp for under your tent as this will prolong the life of your tent and give a little more protection from the ground and cold. A ground clothe or tarp is a must when it comes to camping and can be found at any store that sells camping equipment and supplies.

Next, you will need a lantern. There are several different kinds to select from including rechargeable battery type. When it comes to lanterns, there’s a propane electronic ignition and a propane dual mantle (that will require matches). Make certain that you pack plenty of extra lantern fuel and a funnel to fill your lanterns while camping.

A dependable flashlight is an imperative piece of camping equipment. Along with your flashlight, make certain that you have spare batteries.

A fire extinguisher is a another must to be included in your list of vital camping equipment. In order to cut wood for your campsite fire, you will need a small hatchet. Make sure you bring along a hammer as well -- to hammer in the stakes for the tent and for other purposes as well.

Other items that you will need one your camping equipment list include a cooler for food and liquids, ice, food, cooking utensils and plates and silverware. Finally, make certain that you pack along plenty of fresh water.

Once you have all of your necessary camping equipment packed and ready to go, you will be ready for a wonderful experience in the wilderness. Indeed, camping is an experience enjoyed by many, many people the world over. Again, with the right supplies and equipment on hand, you will be prepared for a truly memorable experience.
