Pacific Northwest Hiking - The Right Gear For Oregon Trailways

Hiking is one of Pacific Northwest outdoor enthusiast's favorite activities. Oregon and SW Washington offer an incredible variety of forests, parks and national monuments ready for exploration and appreciation. Hikers should not be taken by surprise in this incredible area of the country however. Forest, coastal lands and cave hiking all present unique challenges to any hiker. The Pacific Northwest can prove to be dangerous if hikers are unprepared.

Forest Trail Hiking

The Northwest's forest trails are ideal hiking destinations because the scenery and beauty are unmatched by any other location. These trails wind through lush pine and fir tree wooded areas, tranquil open meadows, and creek and river crossed landscapes. The native wildlife - beavers, foxes, deer, elk, songbirds, squirrels - make it an ideal place for nature watchers. Oregon and Washington have very well maintained trailways and they take pride in their stewardship of the forests here. However, hikers should still be prepared for the unexpected in these areas.

The most important item to pack on any hiking trip, especially in the summer months, is water. Food is a close second. Emergency lights and signals are also essential for any recreational hiker. Traditional roadside flares or signal lights are not an option in the Northwest wilderness as likelihood of starting an unintentional fire is very high. A LED emergency light is small, lightweight, affordable, and offers powerful, high-quality light that can be used as a distress signal as well as a flashlight.

A multi-purpose pocket knife is also essential to safe hiking in the Northwest. These tools often include miniature scissors and pliers, tweezers and a compass which can all be useful to a hiker. The basic knife blade in these tools can be helpful to scratch trees and branches in order to mark an unfamiliar trail should you get lost. Consider packing mosquito repellent and sun block when hiking these forest trails as well.

Coastal Hiking

The Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable and sometimes treacherous coastal weather. Hikers are advised to dress for the elements when hiking along coast range trails. A rain jacket and sturdy, waterproof boots are essential. The Oregon or SW Washington coast is are often overtaken by dense, heavy fog coverage. These fogs can come in without warning, stranding and disorientating hikers who are unprepared. It is important to bring a powerful LED flashlight or lantern when hiking this area to illuminate the trail or campsite as well as alert help should you need it.

Cave Hiking

Cave hiking is one of the more dangerous forms of recreational hiking. This activity requires specific safety equipment and long-term planning. Along with multiple light sources, appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water, one must also make sure to bring protective head gear, rope, and climbing gloves. Experts recommend headlamps when cave hiking to allow for hands-free hiking. If considering cave hiking in the Northwest, contact a professional in the area who can provide specific equipment needs and precautions.

Hiking the Pacific Northwest trails is an incredible outdoor experience. A summer can be spent enjoying several trails, all with their own unique landscapes and beauties. Whether hiking through the Umpqua or Deschutes National Forests or exploring the Coast's Oregon Sand Dunes, hikers will not be disappointed so long as they come prepared.

Camping - A Checklist of Things to Bring

Before you head for the campsite, make sure you have everything you need to make your travel safe, comfortable and enjoyable. Remember that failing to plan is planning to fail. But what exactly will you bring? The answer lies in figuring out what kind of a camper you are, what your comfort level is, and what style of camp will you have. The complete gear you need covers basic fire building, cooking and dining, lighting and other miscellaneous items that you think you need.

Minimalist camping

These campers can do without a lot of comfort and equipment. They are willing to accept the wilderness as it is, adapting to the natural terrains and weather conditions. They prefer to sleep on the ground rather than lie on a camping cot. Their camp is sparse, creating fire rather than using a stove and lighting small candles rather than using a lantern. The minimalist really tries to experience the outdoors by choice.

Gear-oriented camping

These campers are people who want to be comfortable and prepared. You can find chairs, tables, cots, stoves and other conveniences in their campsites. Gear-oriented campers enjoy the outdoors but they also prefer little amenities that will make their camp a home away from home. Their camping checklist is long and extensive. If you are this type of a camper, you will need some basic things such as a tent (preferably with rain fly and window), sleeping bag, stove, food and water.

In the campsite, if you need to gather some wood to build a fire, bring a small axe to split the logs. You can place your matches in a sealed container, or maybe you can carry butane lighter. Some campers bring dry logs if they are going out on a rain-soaked day.

For your hearty meals, there are a lot of easy-to-cook foods available. If you want to eat an elaborate meal however, then a more sophisticated camping stove (like those with several burners and adjustable flame) is required. Also, bring a cooler and ice packs to preserve your fresh food.

Be sure you have flashlights with extra batteries. One lantern or two will be enough to sufficiently light your camp. These lanterns can run on battery, propane or liquid fuel. Do not underestimate the value of lighting your camp at night especially if you have children with you. They will also be able to enjoy camping games with flashlights and glow sticks.

If you plan to do some hiking, you need a backpack, travel guide, compass, good shoes, extra socks, hat and a map. Don't forget to bring along a multifunction knife, which can be an indispensable tool. One model of a pocket knife even has its own reusable plastic toothpick, which you might have forgotten to include in your checklist. Also, if you like to swim or bathe in a stream or lake (which usually has rock bottoms) bring along some waterproof footgear.

Camping is a great kind of recreation. Find the right campsite for you, the right preparation, and the right tools to ensure that your trip will be memorable. Your checklist will definitely be very dynamic as you add and remove items along the way. But it is absolutely essential to ensure that you have all you need for a great camping trip.

For the second trip, guess what - no mantles! They are a bit hard to find so when you do, buy plenty!

How to Entertain Yourself and Your Family When You Lose Power in Your Home

No matter what area of the country you may live, most people have lost their power to their homes at least once in their lifetime. Depending on the amount of storms as well as if your electrical lines are above or below ground all make a difference in the regularity of this problem as well. When your power does go out, you often realize how much you relied on it to not only get things done like cooking or doing laundry but how much you use your television, computers, and etc. as well. With technology today, so many people rely on televisions, stereos and computers to spend their free time. When you lose your power, all of those things are eliminated. This article will talk about some ideas on what to do to entertain yourself and your family during a power outage such as reading a new book, playing board games, organizing your scrap books using all of the fun scrap booking accessories made from contract die cutting and OEM die cutting and also maybe organizing your home.

Many people do not think they have time to set aside to read a book in their busy lives but losing your power may just allow you that time to do just that. Even in the evening, you can curl up and read by candlelight or by using a flashlight. If you have children, take the time to read to them or have them read to you several books. This is good for them as well as great time for you to bond with them.

Another fun thing to do if you have a family and you lose your electricity is to get out all of your board games that you never seem to play. If you do not have many, ask one of your neighbors that also lost their power to bring over their games and join you in the fun. It is a fun way to spend time with others and is something that can be done during the day or in the evening using candles or a camping lantern to light up the board. Kids love interacting with their parents in a fun way and playing board games is the best way to do that.

Another great idea is to catch up on a project that you have pushed aside from lack of time. Without the computers and the television using up that time, get caught up on updating your photo albums and your scrap booking projects. Depending how long you are out of power, you may be able to get completely updated with your albums. Once again, if you have kids, include them in on this fun project around the dining room table.

Finally, take this extra time to organize areas of your home that have become cluttered and messy. This may be your kitchen pantry or even your closets. Use a flashlight or a headlamp to be able to see into dark areas to get this job done.

Connor R. Sullivan has been researching contract die cutting in order to write an article on the subject. He also did some research on OEM Die Cutting techniques.

Let There Be Light, Part 1 - The Camping Lantern

The only thing worse than setting up a tent in the rain is setting up a tent in the rain in the dark. That is a lesson I learned all too well while trying to set up camp in the middle of the night during a cold New England thunderstorm. Having the right camping lantern can be the difference between a camping trip you'll never forget and one you wish you could.

A good camping lantern is usually one of two styles - gas or battery - and the right one for you depends on the type of camping you'll be doing, the amount of gear you can afford to take, and what you'll be doing while you're camping.

Gas Camping Lanterns

Gas-powered lanterns typically provide the brightest light of the two types, though most are adjustable so you can conserve fuel when you don't need as much light. They usually do better in the cold than do battery-powered lanterns. There are a number of different types of fuel available, including propane, butane, dual fuel, and kerosene. If you live in an area where white gas (butane, propane, etc) is not readily available, dual fuel lanterns are probably the best option because they allow you use unleaded gas. You usually can't go wrong if you choose a lantern that uses the same fuel as your camp stove.

Though it may seem obvious to most, it is worth mentioning that all of these fuels are extremely flammable, and any time you change or refill tanks you should be far away from any open flames or flame sources. Also, because of the nature of system, gas camping lanterns can become very hot, and while in use they should be kept out of children's easy reach.

Necessary equipment besides the lantern and fuel includes spare mantels and a way to light the lantern. Most new lanterns come with electric ignitions, so you won't have to worry about including matches or a barbecue lighter in your supplies for the lantern (don't forget them if you plan on having a fire or cooking something!). You'll need to get a protective carrying case as most lanterns don't come with one included. Optional equipment includes a lantern reflector to redirect light escaping out of the back of the lantern, and a stand to hang your lantern in a central place in camp. Gas camping lanterns are not practical options if you'll be hiking to where you'll be camping, so you'll need to consider another lighting option.

Battery-Powered Camping Lanterns

Battery-powered camping lanterns make up in convenience anything they may lose in other categories. With a little bit of searching you'll be able to find lanterns that use every size and type of battery, and you will be hard pressed to find a gas station or convenient store that doesn't sell batteries. Though not as bright as their gas-powered counterparts, battery-powered lanterns put out plenty of light. On many you can adjust the brightness.

One of their biggest advantages is that they are safe to take inside tents, cars, or other enclosed space. You should never take a gas-burning lantern into a tent or car because of the risk of fire. Depending on the type of light bulb, battery-powered lanterns don't ever get very hot, so they are safer to use around children. They don't do as well in the cold as gas lanterns, so if you're planning any cold weather camping trips, you'll need to consider whether you should have a gas lantern available.

Battery-powered camping lanterns, though sometimes less bulky than gas lanterns, typically are a little larger than you would ever want to carry with you on a hike. Some flashlights feature a lantern option - you sacrifice quite a bit in the way of brightness, but you lose a lot of the bulk, which makes them good hiking options. Additional equipment you should have on hand in addition to the lantern includes extra batteries, spare light bulbs, and optionally a lantern stand that you can put in a central spot in camp.

Which Brand Should I Get?

The brand of lantern you should get depends on what you need and how much you're willing to spend. There are a lot of quality camping lanterns out there. Some have a few more bells and whistles than others. Some cost more than others. The best way to shop for a lantern is first, decide which type of lantern you'll need; and second, shop around for the best price. You'll usually find the best deals online, though retail stores and outdoors warehouses also have great prices sometimes. The most important thing to remember is to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, even if it's dark.

Camping With a Trailer Tent - A Guide to the Advantages of Trailer Tents Or Folding Campers

Trailer tents have significant advantages over ordinary tents because they are packed away in a small trailer and taken wherever you want to go attached to the back of your car. Trailer tents are best described as a cross between a tent and a caravan and, consequently, their real advantages are twofold. Firstly, they offer a very significant increase in home comforts over a traditional tent and, secondly, they offer hugely increased storage space both inside the tent as well as in transit.

In transit you can even store excess camping or gear on top of the trailer and have a complete camping set-up as opposed to having a single tent that you have to carry around in the back of your car, boot or even on the backseat!

A trailer tent is really two items in one with a trailer that comes bundled with a tent. The tent fits away snugly in the bottom of the trailer, and then you can use the top of the trailer to haul a lot more equipment. This also leaves the boot of your car and perhaps also your roof rack for additional storage.

This in itself is a significant advantage because no one ever goes camping with just a tent. There is usually so much other gear with a camping trip that you need a trailer to haul it all. It is like taking a separate house with you along for the ride. That is why you need a special trailer that specially fitted to haul a tent along with other camping materials.

When you're ready to camp, you just unfold the tent from its position where it was stashed away and laid securely inside the trailer and set it up atop the trailer so that people can actually camp out in the trailer with the tent covering them. This is why trailer tents are often described as folding campers. The trailer itself forms a solid base for the tent and offers fixed beds based on the trailer too.

As opposed to a campervan, this leaves your car available to drive around while the tent was set up like this.

Some accessories for trailer tents that can be attached to the trailer include cooler racks, water racks, kitchenette tops, half bed extensions, storage covers, spare tyres with mounts, aluminum ramps, propane racks, boat bars, small awnings, large awnings, lantern posts, jumping jack tent carpets, safety bars, and tables. These accessories really make a trailer tent the option to go with. All of these parts can be attached to your trailer tent, and they can increase its usefulness, utility, and comfort dramatically.

The great news is that if you shop online for new Family Tents or even used Trailer Tents you can find unbeatable deals at rock bottom prices!

Rolling Backpacks - Rewards Of Owning One

Another constructive invention that is added to the collection of practical bags is the rolling backpacks. With its traditional yet functional design, its more capable of providing comfort while carrying your essential items. Rolling backpacks can be used as briefcases containing important papers and equipment, and can also be carried on luggage when you're on travel especially on planes. People from all walks of life can enjoy the infinite designs available for rolling backpacks. Anyone from children to adults can find the ease of using rolling backpacks as they won't hurt your back since they are designed with wheels.

There are few things to consider in selecting the suitable rolling backpack for you. First, you have to look at its ergonomic design. The design of the rolling backpack should match with the owner itself. For instance, a long handle is required for a rolling backpack for owners in order to for them to walk upright when pulling their bags, to avoid bending forward too much that may cause backaches and shoulder pains. The wheels of the rolling backpack may not be used for all types of terrain so wide padded shoulder straps are required for the owners to carry their bags with comfort. You also have to measure the height of the bag which should be two inches above your waist in order for the backpack to be of proper fit for you.

It is recommended by the experts that in choosing any type of bag, including rolling backpacks, the pack should not exceed 20 percent of the person's body weight. This is essential especially when the rolling backpack will be used by children. Adults should teach their children to pack their school supplies in such a way that the weight of the stuff is evenly distributed in the rolling backpack. Adults should also consider the distribution of weight of their items in their backpacks in order to avoid damaging their spine and back muscles.

Aside from its functions and suitability, the design of the rolling backpack is also essential. Children like their packs to have fun and colorful designs so that it won't look like their carrying a luggage. Many designs are available for rolling backpacks of different styles and a variety of colors. Adults, and especially professionals would like their backpacks to look as professional as there are. A wide range of designs for adult backpacks are available from carryon case style to professional looking totes. Children, men, and women can definitely find the style and design that suit them.

Using rolling backpacks is very convenient especially on jetsetters and people on the go since they are comfortable to use without the back aches and shoulder pains.

Campers and Hunters Choose Reliable and Durable LED Flashlights

The days of camping or hunting with an incandescent flashlight are now past as newer technology in the form of reliable and durable LED flashlights is standard equipment for outdoorsmen. This has been both a positive and significant change for the serious camper or hunter who previously had to make use of flashlights that were bulky and prone to failure. If you are planning a trip to the Grand Tetons or simply looking to replace that old flashlight housed in your truck's glove box, then a LED powered flashlight is the way to go. Let's explore the world of current lighting technology and how a LED flashlight should be a part of your standard outdoors equipment.

Incandescent lighting cannot hold a candle to a light-emitting diode or LED. Quite simply, a LED flashlight emits light via a group of miniature light bulbs that are attached to an electrical circuit. With no filament present, LED lights do not easily and inconveniently burn out as they are powered by the movements of electrons contained within a semiconductor. The larger the concentration of LED bulbs within its plastic bulb housing the greater the amount of light emitted.

Putting all of the scientific information to the side, what exactly are the reasons that a LED flashlight is so valued by campers and hunters? Well, let's count the ways as there are many:

Better All Around Lighting: LED flashlights offer a purer and brighter light than found in an incandescent flashlight. The strongest LED flashlights are able to reach as far as a mile away with a concentrated beam of light; compare that to a standard flashlight which gives decent lighting close up but quickly fades out further away.

Highly Power Efficient: If you take an incandescent flashlight with you on a trip, you better bring along some extra sets of batteries as you could run out of power midway through your expedition. With an LED flashlight, only five to ten percent of the power of a comparable light is used, saving you money and making battery replacement an uncommon event. From an environmental disposal standpoint, an LED powered flashlight is the best choice as expended batteries are kept to a bare minimum.

Much More Durable Under Tough Conditions: Who hasn't walked along a rocky trail or path and dropped their flashlight only to find it has broken apart? Basic flashlights are housed in plastic but even an incandescent flashlight made out of rubberized material is still vulnerable to trauma as one drop can break the filament rendering it inoperable. With an LED flashlight, you have use of a device that is made of tough resin and certain to last even through the harshest of conditions.

Offers Superior Resistance to Adverse Weather Conditions: Your hunting trip may have taken you far away from base, so there is nothing worse than a flashlight that is too fragile to operate in a driving rain or hold up under snow or ice. Even if you drop your LED flashlight in a body of water and quickly recover it, more than likely it will still be operating when you pick it up. Don't depend on an incandescent flashlight to offer to you the same resistance to the elements.

Is A Lightweight Device and Easy to Pack: When you are lugging gear through the woods "going light" makes your travels much easier. No need to carry a foot long flashlight weighing five pounds or more when a six ounce LED flashlight will do the job and better at that. You can put away the propane lantern too as LED powered lanterns are safer and lighter. That lighter load will give to you the additional room that you need to carry the hunting knife or two that every hunter must have at the ready.

When selecting an LED light your choices have never been better. Some outdoorsmen prefer to keep their hands as free as possible and opt to purchase a headband LED light. With a headband light, beams can be positioned to point in the direction that you want it to go and the light can be seen as far as 3,000 yards away. A dimmer switch also permits an LED headband light to have another use: you can strap it on when you need to take a look under the hood of your car.

Finally, you can find LED flashlights that serve a number of other different purposes including for professional use, fishing, emergencies, and more. Chances are you already own at least one LED flashlight, but considering its many uses owning only one certainly may not be enough.

This is a great emergency area light, especially for those of us in hurricane country. It uses a cree LED so it's very bright. The size is just perfect for carrying in your hand and operating the control switch. The initial activation produces the brightest light level. A second push takes it down a notch, and then a third push changes it to the strobe mode.

The brightest level will light up an entire room very well. The low setting will light up the room but it's notably not as bright. Still more than adequate for navigating through it though. The strobe is very bright and runs at about 2Hz. It should be visible for miles in a dark countryside.

I particularly liked the sliding reflector on the back side. It changes the light emission from a full 360 to a more forward projection, making it more like a flashlight... but not quite. But it does indeed make it much more effective when sitting it on a mantle or hanging from a tree just to have the light project in the direction of the room or camp. In any case, you can control this just by sliding the reflector up or down into the hidden area in the base.

The three AA batteries fit into a round battery holder which is inserted back into the base from the bottom. The holder seems to be made well and contact springs have very adequate pressure. The interface contacts between the holder and the light are flat spring-loaded pads. Shaking the light quickly did not result in any flickering so I've determined that they connections are fairly solid/reliable.

All-in-all, it is a very good light at a great price. It fits in the hand well and is easy to use (and control) with one hand.

dj olive's whitney biennial installation side room

Client: Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial 2008 when you enter from the main hall of the Armory's second floor, you pass through a heavy black curtain and then step into the tent. six cots with blue wool blankets are in a row to the left and quiet music of warm tones from the right. the light is dim and the fabric covering the hand lashed bamboo frame is made of sqares like a quilt. there is gental back lighting. a triage tent for peace. you can lie down and sleep to the sleeping pill music or choose to pass through. when you come out the far end of the tent, you are under the mezzanine and looking out over the drill hall through the open french doors. you still don't see the moose heads. faint cool light from the drill hall rakes in through the open doors and cuts across the tent. the only other light is from the small bulb on a sewing machine. the sewing machine is an old green industrial model built into a table. behind the sewing machine is a huge quilt made of the same sized squares as the tent, 20"'s. the center 5 squares make a red cross but are sewn on so it appears the cross is falling apart. sloppy. on the opposite wall is a dark staircase with a sign written in a bold child like hand, MOOSE LEVEL. hung in the stairwell, is a stained and beat up camping lantern with thick old glass, very dimly lit. upstairs is a dark room with a kind of bamboo fence, three old lanterns with red light making circles on the low ceiling. under the lanterns three speakers play ...

Butane Lantern

Best Deal of Butane Lantern and Review

I bought one of these for emergency use. Once I had occasion to use it, bought two more! Their small size, and good light output make them perfect for regular camping too. The advantage of clean propane fuel in a can, easily and safely transportable, can't be overstated. The mantel, the way it slips over the supply line, rather than your having to hang and tie it, makes it easy to set up and service. I hope Target continues to carry and promote this item. EVERYONE should have one of these in their emergency supplies for disasters, etc. You can safely use these indoors with proper ventilation.
