How to Make Camping Lights

Numerous families enjoy to go out camping for a couple of days during the summer time. It is a good way to spend time with each other without the need to spend a couple hundred dollars.

One thing that kids enjoy to do on these trips is make things. Why not show them how to create camping lights out of items that are around the house. These are a good way for them to have fun without the need to spend a lot of money and they will enjoy utilizing them through the entire trip.

There are a couple of things you can utilize to put the lantern together. The simplest and more common item to use is the coffee can. Use a big, empty can and punch holes into the sides using a nail and hammer. The holes must be two inches apart and set above the base of the can.

Now apply about an inch of petroleum on the bottom within it. Set three or four candles in the jelly and utilize a match to light it up. The jelly will help to keep the candles stable and will help it to keep it going even after the candles are done.

If you want something that is smaller than you will have the ability to make them out of soda cans. Utilize a box cutter and cut out a few slits that are on the side of the can. The slits must be a half an inch away from the top and a half an inch away from the base. All of them need to also be a half an inch apart.

Drive the top and bottom of the can together. Now use a pencil and twist the sides out. Cut away two bars to create an opening that you can put the candle to go through. Melt a little bit of wax about the candle so that you are able to secure it to the bottom. These diy camping lanterns are perfect to use on picnic tables and around the campfire.

You need to make sure that you Buy Camping Lanterns that are easy to carry and to use. When in doubt you can be creative and Make Camping Lights from recycled cans.

A Quality Outdoor Camping Solar Lantern

Well, if you are a camper whether young or old, you can start going eco-friendly and use solar power. The K-Light Solar Lantern is an affordable solar flashlight or lantern that uses the power of the sun to charge the small, but powerful LEDs.

The powerful LEDs is just one of the great benefits of the solar k light. The K-Light from Pisat has a 360 handle that rotates and even comes off if you wanted to use it for something else. Also if you wanted to hang it out a tree or tent line, it has a strong handle and body that won't cause it to break if it dropped. If you were wondering about power, well it is by far the best solar camping light I have seen light, because it only takes 2 hours to charge and can last up to 20 hours. That is one powerful solar panel.

There is a small lightweight solar panel that is included that will collect energy from outdoor lighting and indoor lighting. Yes that is true, I said that right it even charges indoors if you wanted it to. The solar panel is also removable so you won't have to carry it everywhere you go. There is a small little plug insert on the back on the solar k-light so you can easily plug it in and charge it up. The actual life span of the solar k-light is 10 years. If we did the math, that would over 500 dollars in savings from the batteries alone. That doesn't include the bulb replacement that would have to happen with regular lanterns or flashlights.

As you can tell, owning a solar k-light lantern is going to be the best investment you might ever make simply by the savings, all the other extra benefits like helping the environment, using sustainable type lighting, and using it all day long, makes it that much better. If you are a camper and have realized the potential, what are you waiting for? Get yours today!

My First Night at the Lamping Homestead Recreational Area-Wayne National Forest

This is the picnic pavilion here at the Campground at the Lamping Homestead Recreational Area. I was using my Coleman model 286 one-mantle white gas lantern to light up the dark night. It did a pretty good job in my humble opinion. I was having a great time this first night here at Lamping. Drinking tea masala and listening to the radio. Enjoy the video, Dear Viewer! :)

Primitive Camping?

I was just reading a blog that discussed primitive camping; The writer stated that it was all about camping the way they did back in the 1800's, including the clothing. Sounds like fun, but I do like modern camping equipment. With the right equipment, camping doesn't have to be uncomfortable.

I've done a fair amount of tent camping over the years, and the modern definition of primitive camping, at least the one used by most campgrounds for their sites, are those sites which don't have electricity and water. Truthfully, not having electricity when camping isn't a major issue, but I do sort of like having water available. Given the option of a site without water and one with a spigot right there, I'll pay a couple of extra dollars for the available water. Then on the other hand, I have brought my own on many occasions using a 5 gallon water carrier.

Over the years I've done my share of tent camping on islands, in National Forests, in open fields, and on beaches, in what would be considered primitive camping conditions, where whatever conveniences we had were what we brought with us.

Regardless of where we camp, we like the convenience provided by propane stoves, a good tent, a comfy cot or air mattress and a good sleeping bag. Add in a cooler, a Coleman lantern and a few other essentials, and you have the basics for a good "primitive" camping trip.

Cooking over an open fire is OK for some things, but you can't beat the convenience of lighting a propane stove to cook on, or a having a good propane lantern to light up the site. And I love the queen size cot I found years back that uses a queen size air mattress...talk about comfortable camping. It fits perfectly inside my 5 person tent, which is just perfect for two people and has enough room to stand up in when you're changing clothes. 8-)

Ok, so maybe it's not that primitive based on some people's definition, but it is fun getting out and sleeping in a tent in the outdoors. So leave me to my modern camping conveniences and a good size tent and I'll be happy with the modern definition of primitive camping.

I love the outdoors and will probably never get tired of tent camping, but I also like what is available in modern camping equipment. Definitions can change over time as has camping, and with all the great camping equipment available today why not be comfortable? Use the camping technology available for your next "primitive" camping trip and enjoy.

Motorcycle Camping Gear - Carry More To Distant Places

A motorcycle camping trip is one of the most exciting ways to explore the country. Make no mistake in differentiating between motorcycle camping trips and a road trip. In a motorcycle camping trip you actually pitch a tent and spend the night in the lap of nature as compared to a road trip where you pull over and check into an inn or motel to spend the night. If you are an adventurer and would rather spend the night under the open sky, then get yourself a motorcycle, if you do not already have one, and plan a camping trip you will never forget.

However, before you set out in haste on a motorcycle camping trip, you will do yourself good to do a bit of research on the activity you are about to undertake. That is of course, if you are a newbie to the sport of motorcycle camping. Check your camping gear and then double check it. Ensure you have the right gear and no unwanted stuff you do not actually need for the trip. If you feel you need to make a camping kit from scratch or just add a few things to your already existing kit you will find no dearth of motorcycle camping items in your local sports shop or general market. You must choose the items wisely and buy only the ones that will fit comfortably on your motorcycle. You have a large selection of hard bags to choose from. The beauty of these hard bags is that they can fit snugly on your bike without the fear of falling off or having to stop frequently to adjust them, and they can be painted to suit your bike. However, unlike the soft bags that are easy to fold and store away, hard bags are required to be stored on a frame and are more expensive than their soft counterparts, and so are by-passed most of the time for the softer variety.

Some of the other essential items that must make it to your camping kit include; a tent, some waterproofing material such as plastic or canvas, a sleeping bag, compact cooking gear such as a collapsible stove, eating and cooking utensils, adequate clothing, motorcycle tools and a puncture repair kit. Choose the items for your motorcycle camping kit wisely, it will help you when you are packing and unpacking during the trip.

Get yourself a strong waterproof tent for your camping kit. Include a waterproof matting such as a plastic or canvas sheet to place under the tent to prevent water seepage if it happened to rain during the trip. However, if you are more of the open-air types and would rather sleep under the open sky, you will not need a tent, just the canvas will do for a base to place the sleeping bag on. However, it is highly recommended that you keep a tent with you as it may come handy should Mother Nature decide to pour down on you any time during your trip. Get a sturdy and comfortable sleeping bag as well. A lightweight bag made of down and polyester is strong, warm and can be folded up into a very small package that takes up very little space.

Once you have put your motorcycle kit together after a lot of thought, you can assure yourself many enjoyable hours in the lap of nature.

The Importance of Camping Water Filters

Camping has always been a fun activity for people who love the outdoors. Seasoned trekkers would always know the best camping equipment to carry while they go on a trek or camping trip. The few things I can think of are a good and strong tent (most important), food along with a mini refrigerator, and another very important item, the camping water filter.

You don't want to run out of water when you are going on a trek. If you were to drink the water from a lake or stream you know that it is going to have a lot of germs. Even if you heat it and boil the water there still might be a small percentage of germs which would be left behind. You don't want to be sick in the middle of the jungle do you? One of the main concerns people have when they head off to the country side is where they would get clean water from. If you are going to an organized campsite you would know that there would be a source of clean water there. But if you are treading of alone or with a companion it is important that you carry a purification system or filter with you.

The reason why people don't carry these is because they do not know much about water purification techniques. One of the most effective are camping water filters. There are many hikers and trekkers that believe that the mountain water of the great outdoors is pure. This is a massive misconception, it is very important that you remember that if you cannot guarantee the purity of the water you're drinking, do NOT take a sip.

Camping water filters are very light and can be easy stored in your backpack. You could choose from a number of sizes and designs. But it is important that you clean these regularly and inspect them thoroughly as the filter could get dirty and thus the purification could be quite ineffective. If you are not carrying one these then the best option you have is to boil your water. What tends to happen is that most people do not boil the water for long enough. Remember to boil the water for a minimum of ten minutes. You need to boil it for an additional minute for the rise of every 1000 meters of altitude. This would kill more or less any germs that are in the water.

So the next time you are thinking of going on a trip to the countryside remember to keep this article in mind.

Buy your Camping Water Filter at Filter Flow Tech and enjoy free shipping. Our full line of water filters, including the SteriPen water purifier, are on sale now.

Camping Lighting - Don't Get Caught in the Dark!

What is the perfect source of camping lighting? The types of camping lamps on the market today is so extensive that it can be confusing. Some lanterns use battery power, some camping fuel, some solar power or even some lamps can store power through a wind-up mechanism. Of the fueled camping lighting, they can run on lamp and paraffin oils, kerosene, propane gas, LPG, unleaded gasoline, butane, or even duel-fuel lamps. Even more thought needs to be put into the physical construction of the lantern - is it sturdy, shock proof, weatherproof, shatter resistant, how heavy is it and what is the lamp's actual physical size. If we take it one step further still, how much power or fuel will one lantern drain in comparison to another, what globes are required (LED or fluorescent - and what are the advantages/disadvantages of each), how bright do they glow, is the brightness adjustable, and are the camping lamps easy to service and use. Are they noisy to run, safe to use, emit any fumes........... Phew!.......... As you can see this list could go on and on!......There is no answer to the question of perfect camping lighting. The lighting you will need entirely depends on your individual camping requirements.

To find what camping lighting sources you need, you will need to examine what type of camping you will be doing. For example:

* will you be camping with your family where there will be kids running around (you might need long lasting and safe, or low heat, lighting)

* are you planning a hiking adventure (light-weight, long lasting, rugged and weatherproof lighting might be required)

* is it a fishing camping trip (you would probably need flashlights and a small floodlight)

* will you be adventuring in low light environments (head lamps would be useful)

* do you need to light larger communal areas of a campsite (floodlighting will be required)

As with all elements of camping you need to plan for your camping lighting requirements before you set out, and you should base your lighting choices on the type of camping you will be participating in. Remember, when you're in a dark, desolate camping area you'll be thankful in being over-prepared as opposed to under-prepared with your lighting choices.

Outdoor Hanging Candle Lanterns

With the holiday season quickly approaching, we must get ready for all the festivities that come along with celebrating the holidays. For many of the northern states in the USA, Labor Day is the last holiday celebrated outside before the weather turns to cold to do so. It is often associated with outdoor activities such as having a BBQ in the backyard, family reunions, and the plain old fashion get-togethers where you invite as many family and friends over as humanly possible, everybody brings a dish, and all present enjoy each other's company.

Well needless to say these types of functions often carry over into the night. Once the sun goes down on your event, you will be faced with the dilemma of how to provide adequate lighting to keep the fun going when daylight begins to fade and the shade of the evening takes over. Have you ever considered the versatility of outdoor hanging candle lanterns? Not only are they a great way to add style and flair to your outdoor event, you can also place mosquito repellant candles in them and thereby keeping the pesky bugs at bay.

Lanterns have been lighting the way for centuries. They date back to the Stone Age when the earth was populated by cavemen. Even as far back as biblical times mankind relied on candles and candle lanterns for their source of lighting. There were only two sources of light, natural sunlight and light derived from candles and candle lanterns. During this era, candle light was used as the primary source of lighting.

Not only are they made from sturdy and durable wrought iron, some are made from cooper and various other metals. If you are looking for an alternative lighting source, consider hanging a few of these lanterns in your yard. They have been able to withstand the course of time. Outdoor hanging candle lanterns can be purchased for as little as ten dollars and range upwards toward the hundred dollar price tag. This wide range of pricing makes them suitable for any budget.

A great way to save on the purchase of outdoor hanging candle lanterns is to strategically place them just outside the glow cast by your existing back porch light. This will allow you to take advantage of existing lighting while illuminating additional areas within your space.

Outdoor hanging candle lanterns come in a host of styles. The rustic style lanterns are great if you are looking for a light source for camping, hiking or any outdoor sporting event. There are however styles that are the complete opposite of those which are rustic in nature. These candle lanterns have a more elegant appeal. They are ornate looking with fancy lines and detailing. They are more often used as a decorative lighting source at weddings, Christmas gatherings, and other social events that have a more formal appeal.

If neither of those styles fit within your design scheme, try adding outdoor hanging candle lanterns that have clean lines and are of a more simplistic nature. These candle lanterns will have a big impact on your design scheme because they will add a subtle appeal to your environment without overpowering it.

In essence, no matter what type of function you are hosting, outdoor hanging candle lanterns will not only add a punch of style and vigor to your decor, outdoor hanging candle lanterns will also light up your environment casting a glow that is very pleasing to the eye as well as soothing to the soul.

Coleman Northstar Instastart Propane Lantern

Best Deal of Coleman Northstar Instastart Propane Lantern and Review

Customer Review

I bought one of these lanterns three years ago at the local discount store. I have used it numerous times on camping expeditions. It outputs very bright light at full blast. The lantern is quick to light and the best part is it does not require matches.

The only three issues I have with this lantern are:
1. Sucks the propane. I also have the coleman fuel lantern, and while it is not as bright, it can go for a week of camping on one tank (5 cups) of fuel.
2. Loud. This lantern is loud when burning. The above mentioned lantern is much quieter.
3. Construction -- the fiberglass (?) base around the knob has disintegrated from my thumb rubbing it when trying to light the lantern. Hopefully this will not affect the longevity of the lantern.

I'd recommend it if you are looking for convenience and bright light, but if you are looking for value, go with the old dual mantle coleman fuel (pump up) lantern.

More About Creating a Camping Supply List

There is more to a good camping checklist than a tent, sleeping bags, and clothes. (Read the first part of Creating a Camping Supply List for more info on these items.) You will also want to include the right food, cooking and kitchen supplies, and a variety of other camping items on your checklist.

Camp cooking and preparing your favorite camping recipes is one of the best parts of a camping trip. Take care to include everything you need to prepare your meals, eat, and clean up. Many campgrounds provide charcoal grills at each campsite as well as picnic tables. If you are planning to use the facility grill, remember charcoal, and bring a table cloth, as well as table clips for breezy days.

You may also want a camp stove or a camping grill. Bring along plenty of fuel to last through your trip, matches, and fire starters, as well. Skewers, camp forks, camp grills, and broiler baskets are all ideal for cooking over the open fire. You will also want camp cookware, pots, pans, and a Dutch oven, depending on the camping recipes you plan to prepare. Don't forget the cooking utensils, spatulas, knives, and lids for your pots, as well as potholders or oven mitts. An extra folding table may come in handy for camp cooking and you will want plenty of garbage bags to dispose of your trash and leftovers.

Avid campers often keep a set of dishes for camping trips, while some use paper plates and plastic utensils. Whichever you prefer, be sure to include them on your camping supply list. Plates, bowls, cups, mugs, and eating utensils are a must. You may also need measuring cups, a can opener, and other specialty utensils like peelers or shredders. Other important camp cooking items include dish soap, a dishpan, dish cloths and towels, and scrub pads for dirty pots and pans. Heavy duty aluminum foil is a camping necessity and you will want to remember cooking spray and storage containers as well.

Your camping supply list may include several coolers and, after a few family camping trips, you will see how useful more than one cooler can be. The Coleman 50 Qt. ice chest and 9 Qt. Excursion cooler combo is ideal. A chest cooler is great for your campsite to hold soft drinks, juice, water, and perishable foods, while a smaller 6 pack cooler is perfect for visiting the beach or taking to the pool.

There are several other items you should considering including on your camping checklist. Keep your maps, guidebooks, and any reservation confirmations nearby for easy access. Don't forget sunscreen, bug repellent, and lip balm, as well as a pocket knife or multipurpose tool, flashlight, a camping lantern, and extra batteries, bulbs, and fuel for gas, kerosene, or propane lanterns.

Regardless of where you are camping or how long your trip will last, one of the most important items on your camping checklist is a good first aid kit. It is a good idea to carry an emergency kit in your vehicle at all times and especially important while camping. If you are planning day hikes, boating outings, horseback riding, or other outdoor activities, you will want a smaller first aid kit that can fit inside your daypack as well.

15 Camping Stove Safety Rules

Unless you are the pioneering type, a camping stove will accompany you on any camping trip. While they are very convenient and easy to operate, different stoves work on different fuels and work in different ways. So always read the owners manual. Aside from that, here are 15 rules that should be followed in regards to camping stoves for your protection and mother natures.

1 - Being as children are a big part of camping, the use, refueling and storing of a stove should only be done under a knowledgeable adult.

2 - Use only approved, undamaged fuel containers. Keep them far from open flames and any other source of heat.

3 - When you need to changed the compressed gas cartridges, or when you need to refill liquid fuel containers, allow the stove (or lantern) to cool completely .

4 - Refill stoves or lanterns outside away from any other flames or heat source. For liquid fuel use a funnel and then allow any spilled fuel to evaporate before attempting to ignite.

5 - Place your camping stove on a cleared, level surface. On snow, place it on a large piece of plywood. This will keep the stove warmer and reduce the tendency for it to tip over.

6 - Check stoves, hoses and tanks before each outing. Check for bent valves, cracked hoses and stripped treads that could cause leaks and possible explosions.

7 - Keep the fuel tanks as far from the actual camping stove as possible. Always keep your head and body to one side when lighting in case it creates a flare up.

8 - Never leave a lit stove or lantern unattended.

9 - Do not over load the stove. These are not made for heavy duty cooking but transportability. If anything larger then a 2 quart pot is needed, setup a second grill and place the stove under it.

10 - Do not discard empty containers. If they are not refillable, they should be disposed of properly being as the dumpster at the campsite might be disposed of by burning all refuse.

11 - Camping stoves or lanterns must never be used inside a tent or any building with poor ventilation.

12 - All canisters should be bright red or at least marked well so they don't get confused with water bottles

13 - Carry fuel cartridges away form all foods. This may mean carrying it on the outside of a back pack.

14 - Shut off the supply valve at the tank before disconnecting hoses. Allow the extra gas in the line to bleed off.

15 - All ways read the manufactures guide lines and follow them.

My son has been in Boy Scouts for 4 years now and he is working on his Star Ranking. I have been adopted as an assistant and have enjoyed just about every camp out they have gone on. I've learned a lot from those little guys, and must say that I look forward to these monthly outings each and every time. Rain or shine, winter or summer.

Folding Cot For Comfortable Camping

Sleep in Comfort When Camping

There are so many benefits of camping and most involve how 'simple' it is. You need just basic necessities to make the trip successful. No one packs the television, laptop, microwave, and most should learn to leave their cell phones at home! The one element of camping that you really do need to make it enjoyable is a comfortable place to sleep. This used to be the big challenge for campers. Sleeping bags on the hard ground, trying to find a level spot with no rocks or tree roots poking in you side. This test of our patience and tolerance has been put to rest with some wonderful options in sleeping comfort for campers. The one that stands out in my camping experience is the folding cot for comfortable camping.

Previously we used to drag out the inflatable mattress. As we spent out time jumping up and down on the foot pump we would hold our breath in anticipation. Would there be a new hole? Would the patch job from last season still be in tact or did the glue dry up and the patch fall off? Now with the folding cots, set up is a breeze. They are lightweight, compact to transport and most come with travel bags as well. This is quite unlike the air mattress you can rest in peace on your own rather than bouncing around every time the person next to you rolls over.

The folding cots are a sturdy, lightweight, affordable, and durable with several options capable of holding in excess of 300 pounds. You won't need to repair or replace the cot like the old air mattress. They are also handy to have around for a large group of house guests and kids sleepovers. The kids like to pretend they are camping. Did I mention these are quite comfortable to sleep on as well? The fabric cradles your body. The only thing that could be improved upon is if we could figure out how to make them so they rock you to sleep.

To enjoy a great outdoors adventure it is important to sleep well! Tent friendly cots are lightweight, durable and comfortable.
