Guide to the Blue Ridge Parkway - Favorite Things to See and Do in Virginia

The scenic Blue Ridge Parkway travels over 469 miles of mountain tops through North Carolina and Virginia. Along the way, there are plenty of panoramic overlooks, picnic areas, and several campgrounds to accommodate both trailers and tents. The Blue Ridge Parkway also offers more than one hundred hiking trails, as well as access to larger trail systems like the 2000 mile long Appalachian Trail and the 900 mile Mountain to Sea Trail in North Carolina.

Many of the short trails offer historical exhibits and live demonstrations of a forgotten life in the Appalachians. There are also many other attractions along the Blue Ridge Parkway that are fun for the entire family. Humpback Rocks is an 800 acre park with various hiking and bicycling opportunities. The visitor center is located at milepost 5.8 and features a working 19th century Appalachian farmstead. Boating access is available at nearby Sherando Lake.

The Stonewall Jackson House offers guided tours of the confederate general's home. There are also lush gardens, an informative museum, and small gift shop. This attraction is located just off MP 45.6 in Lexington, VA.

Just 15 minutes off the Blue Ridge Parkway at MP 63.7 is The Natural Bridge, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Aside from this wondrous sight, there is a nature park, a variety of peculiar museums, and a living village displaying the life of Indians who once inhabited the area. The Virginia Safari Park is also located minutes away.

Peaks of Otter is a 5000 acre park between MP 84 and MP 87 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Surrounded by the Jefferson National Forest, this parkway attraction provides a variety of hiking trails. Visitors can see live interpretations at the old Johnson Farm and view the first travel lodge in the area, Polly Wood's cabin. Peaks of Otter also features a picnic area and restaurant, campground and lodge, and a 24 acre lake, so bring your Coleman inflatable kayak.

Virginia's Explore Park, located just off MP 115.1, is a cultural attraction with living history demonstrations, a restaurant, and a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and kayaking.

Mill Mountain and Roanoke Mountain, located off Blue Ridge Parkway MP 120, offer a campground, a variety of hiking trails, and Mill Mountain Discovery Center, an educational attraction with fun hands-on environmental exhibits. Roanoke, VA also has a variety of attractions only minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, including a zoo, caverns, and museums.

Rocky Knob is a 4800 acre park at MP 167 offering the only cabin rentals on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rocky Knob has 15 miles of hiking trails and is also the location of the restored Mabry Mill, a very popular parkway attraction. The Mabry Mill offers self-guided tours of Appalachian life more than a century ago and also features a country restaurant and a gift shop.

The Blue Ridge Music Center is located at MP 213 and features outdoor musical performances during the summer with an emphasis on bluegrass.

Exploring Skyline Drive - Camping, Hiking, and Things to Do Part 2

Skyland, located at MP 42, is the highest point on Skyline Drive. The high elevation of 3680 feet offers a comfortable temperature during the heat of the summer and makes Skyland a very popular location. Skyland Resort offers a variety of accommodations, including country cabins, luxurious suites, and 179 lodge rooms. The Skyland Restaurant serves a savory selection of entrees and offers a casual sit-down dining experience with terrific views of the mountainside. Skyland Stables offers guided horseback rides through the 150 mile network of riding trails in Shenandoah National Forest.

Big Meadows is another favorite attraction along Skyline Drive and is located at MP 51. The Henry F. Byrd, Sr. Visitor Center is available for backcountry camping permits and other information about the Shenandoah National Forest and also has a number of interesting exhibits relating the history of Big Meadows. A variety of guided hikes are available from Big Meadows, as well as Skyland Resort, including scenic day hikes to the beautiful waterfalls of the Shenandoah Forest and breathtaking sunset hikes.

Big Meadows Lodge offers 25 rustic guest rooms, as well as cabin and suite accommodations. The lodge restaurant is available for casual country style dining overlooking the mountaintops and the Wayside serves a tasty selection of local favorites to eat in their dining room or to enjoy at the nearby picnic area. The Wayside also sales camping supplies, groceries, and other essentials you may need on your Skyline Drive vacation. Big Meadows also has a secluded campground for tent camping and Rvs with access to several waterfall hiking trails.

Less than 10 miles away, at MP 57.5, is Lewis Mountain campground, a small, isolated campground for tents. Reservations are not accepted at Lewis Mountain and a campstore is located on the premises for supplies. Lewis Mountain also offers furnished cabin rentals for a private, relaxing evening in the Shenandoah Forest. Dogs are welcome to visit the Shenandoah National Forest as well and are allowed in the campgrounds and on all the hiking trails except for a few. Keep your dog on a leash while hiking and don't forget a fun camping toy, like the Coleman pheasant dog toy.

MP 63 marks the entrance to the South River picnic area that is open year round for picturesque picnic settings. The final visitor center and recreation area before reaching the southern end of Skyline Drive, Loft Mountain, is located at MP 79.5. Restrooms, picnic tables, and a camp store with a full service grill is can be found here. Camping on top of Big Flat Mountain in Skyline Drive's largest campground, Loft Mountain, is popular because of the amazing views and nearby waterfalls.

Primitive group camping is available by reservation at the Dundo group campground, located at MP 83.7. Scenic Skyline Drive ends at MP 105 and marks the southern boundary of the Shenandoah National Forest. You can continue your travels on the amazing Blue Ridge Parkway as it winds over the mountains into North Carolina or exit the scenic bypasses via Interstate 64 or Rt. 250.

Ready For Camping This Season?

Time to shake the cobwebs off of your camping gear, air it out and get ready for yet another year of camping adventures.

Camping is fun but be prepared. Here are some helpful tips that we've learned (the hard way) through our "no husband" " no "boyfriends" all girl camping trips (you can have kids if any).

1. Hang lantern in tree not at table. Otherwise every flying creature will emerge from the darkness and attack.
2. Arrive at campground before dark and start your campfire while it's still light out. There is a special hell for campers who arrive after midnight and shine their headlights into your tent.
3. Bring wet wipes! You will find 101 uses for them, we promise.
4. Make sure everyone has their own flashlight and camping chair . If not, it will get ugly. Don't say we didn't warn you.
5. Bring small hand broom to clean up tent and car. Or a hand vacuum if you're really anal.
6. Try and avoid setting up camp next to stagnant water, which is home to biting insects.
7. Pack your clothes in garbage bags. It will keep your clothes dry if a sudden storm blows up and it can serve as a laundry basket at the end of your trip.
8. For ice to keep your food cold for a long period of time, fill either a gallon milk jug or a 2 liter pop container half full with water and freeze. Make sure you do not put the lid on the container when in the freezer.
9. Give kids camp chores and rotate them. Hahaha! No really.
10. Check in with campground host/ranger and ask them about the area. No flirting allowed...
11. Your good looks may be enough to get things sizzling when out on the town, but, unfortunately, in the woods they don't count for much. Make sure at least one of you knows how to set up the tent and that someone has lit your stove to make sure it works.
12. Stock up on drinking water . This stuff is like liquid gold after the first few days of camping.
13. NEVER leave a campsite with a fire still burning.
14. During a thunderstorm, don't take a shower or use a sink, including washing dishes.
15. Have car keys within reach at night so that you can press the alarm if an emergency arises. And no, a deflated air mattress is not an emergency.
16. Do not assume that every campsite still has their grill or that it will suit your cooking needs. Plan to bring a grate to put over the fire.
17. Meals that can be cooked ahead of time at home and travel well in a cooler will save a lot of time especially on the first night of your trip.
18. Relax and enjoy yourself!

Don't leave home without these items:

1. Bug Spray/Benadryl (Homemade bee traps the girls invented)
2. Head Lamp or good Flashlights( not firefly)
3. Extra Batteries
4. Air Mattress/Sleeping mat
5. Hat for those bad hair days
6. Zip Lock and garbage bags
7. Bring a back-up or rainy-day activity
8. Camp chairs
9. Cooking Stove
10. Sunscreen!
11. S'mores
12. good socks
13. Hiking boots or a good pair of trail runners
14. I get tired very soon what tonics should I take?
15. Chapstick or chapstick with sunscreen
16. Bring internal tampons instead of external pads (you never know what happen and where it happens!)
17. zip-loc baggies(great help)
18. Your favorite pillow
19. EARPLUGS!!
20. DO NOT FORGET aluminum foil and marshmallows.

Leave home without these items:

1. Anything that uses electricity. Um yeah, that includes the hairdryer or hair straighter.
2. Try not to bring too many re-chargeable toys. That sounds -kind of bad, but think G rated.
3. No perfumed product (they attract mosquitoes)
4. Cell phones - Might not work anyway, or just leave them in the car.
5. Makeup - Ok, that's a hard one with teenage girls. Save the foundation, as you are likely to sweat it all off.
6. Moodiness.
7. Your plaid shirts.

3. When you are backing your boat, camper or motor home into your parking space, have someone in your party shout directions loudly and clearly. Keep at it, revving your engine, grinding your reverse gear and spinning your tires in the gravel until you get it exactly right,

4. If things take longer than you planned, as they often do in nature, take control by swearing obscenities. If your temper upsets the kids, even better. It will ease the tension for everyone if you get them to cry.

5. Leave directions for your gear at home. Pump your gas lantern for all your worth, then throw in a live match and enjoy the majesty of your own atomic blast. If you keep the gas valve completely open, your campsite can serve as a fiery beacon for other campers who may be lost, disoriented or under the impression they were sleeping comfortably.

6. Don't practice setting up your tent at home, so you can have a full blown Kramer-vs-Kramer style marital fight which pole goes where first. Extra points for you if you brought a tent with metal poles. Plastic poles just don't clang loudly enough when you throw the pole sack on the ground, trip over them and kick them out of the way.

7. Don't feed your kids on time, so they will stand and gawk at other campers eating.

8. Instead of the ingredients for s'mores bring a small liquor store. And party all night. With the boom box on full blast, of course.

9. Make sure your camping party includes :

a) drunks;

b) someone with bronchitis, emphysema or other loud hacking cough; and

c) tired and cranky kid under the age of four. And finally,

10. Don't use a packing list. That way you can have opportunity to meet the neighbors when you need to beg and borrow toilet paper, matches, eggs or bug spray.

Family Camping Trip Preparation - Use A Checklist

You do not go on a driving trip without a map, you should not go on a family camping trip without a camping checklist. Checking off the essential camping supplies and camping gear as you pack helps to ensure you bring everything you need so everyone will enjoy the experience.

Tent and bedding - For family camp excursions you will need a couple of proper sized tents, tent stakes a (carry extra stakes with you, too), hammer and a stake puller. You can use oilcloths or tarpaulins, a little larger than the floor of your tent to cover the floor of your tent. This inhibits the mud and dust to accumulate. Bring a broom and a small mat to help you to keep your tent clean and tidy.

A great number of choices are available when selecting your bedding and sleeping material. Choose the correct sized sleeping bag for each member of your family. This makes it more comfortable for sleeping. You can use air mattresses or camp pads to get you off the ground, avoiding the cool and wet. Remember pillows and extra blankets because you never know how cool the evenings will be.

Clothes - One of the most essential things on your camping list is the clothes that you need to pack. Obviously the garments you carry will be in accordance with the weather, location and things that you intend to do. Put in 3 sets of clothes, something to sleep in, a jacket, a sweatshirt, and a rain gear. What you bring should fit into a brown grocery bag. If it over flows you are bringing too much. Camping is not a fashion show so dress down and comfortable. Long pants, socks, and hiking shoes for hiking and carry your swimsuit, sandals that you can put on the beach, and head gear for water activities. Use the laundry conveniences that are offered by most campgrounds if your camping trip is long. This will allow you to carry only a couple of sets of garments with you.

Personal items - Even though camping is not a fashion show you need to maintain your hygiene. Your needs will vary depending on what the facilities are but there are basics. Put soap, deodorant, dental care products, hair care, and important medicines in a waterproof container. this keep the items dry and easy to carry. Bring change. Some facilities charge for hot water in the showers.

What to pack in - Use rubber totes or heavy duffel bags to pack in. Each person can pack their own tote. If the kids are small let them help pack because 'part of the fun of camping is getting there'. Rain materials, swimsuits, towels, camping games, and beach toys should be packed in a separate tote as they are not too frequently used.

Use the laundry bag, a large plastic garbage bag, or an old pillow case to keep the unclean clothes away from the good ones. For wet clothes bring a clothes line and clothes pins so, for example, beach towels can dry and be used several times.

Additional essential camping gear - Other important items to pack include an ax, camera, campfire utensils, coffee pot, compass, cooking utensils, cooler(s), eating utensils, first aid kit, flashlights, folding chairs, folding table, ice, insect repellent, knives, gas lantern, lighter or matches, paper and pencil/pen, saw, shovel, spare change for laundry or shower facilities, sunglasses, sunscreen, table cloth with hold-down fasteners, tool kit, trash bags, and water containers, and wood for the campfire.

Camping is a great way for families to vacation without the high price tag. It allows you to escape daily routines, and will give your family the opportunity to be with each other. Your camping trips may grow into a tradition that everyone looks forward to with excitement and will remember for a lifetime. Be prepared ahead of time by using a camping checklist. This will ensure you have the correct camping gear and items your family needs so the camping experience can be enjoyed by everyone.

Life's like a MasterCard commercial and so is camping. This means everything costs something but memories made are priceless. Memories can be made in a cost effective manner. Maximizing the fun and minimize the money spent is possible if you know some ways to reduce costs. The most effective way of having a memorable camping vacation is to create a budget and follow these tips and tricks. The key is to have some key pieces of equipment that can be used in a variety of ways and that will last a long-time. This will allow you to enjoy the benefits of the equipment without worrying about the long-term effects of the cost.

It is frustrating trying to put together a quality set of camping supplies on a limited amount of money but it is very possible. First off, develop a list of equipment priorities. The camp site location and the fuel to get there is a primary necessity. Food and water to last for the length of your stay would come next. Other important tools to include in your camping equipment list are a long-lasting flashlight or lantern, multi-purpose knife, extra batteries, a first-aid kit and matches to build a campfire. Supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, and chairs will make camping comfortable and will keep you warm and dry. The secondary list of items would include hobby tools and equipment like those for boating, cycling, or fishing.

Camp Site Location and Getting There

Campground prices usually weigh in a $12 to $25 per night. Call the campground ahead of time to determine prices at your local state or national parks. Also, consider whether the campground you are going to has running water, bathroom and shower facilities, charcoal grills and trash disposal areas. Depending on whether the grounds have these you may need to add or take away items from your camping list. Additionally, estimate gas money ahead of time to ensure you are prepared.

Food and Water

Include in your camping list the coolers, water jugs, paper or plastic plates, and cups you may need. Investing in reusable camping dishes is a benefit for families that camp often and saves on the environment as well. Purchase enough food to last the course of your camping vacation and be smart about buying non-perishable foods wherever possible. About $200 should be allotted for food and gas. This should cover your needs for about a 2-3 day trip, depending on how many people you are feeding and how far you plan to travel.

Camping Tools and Equipment

There are several items that are camping essentials. A multi-purpose tool or knife is essential for safe and effective camping. A multi-purpose survival knife will come in handy for cutting string or twine to hold down tents or hang tarps during rainy weather. It can also be used for opening canned food, gutting fish, and fixing other equipment should it break. There are a number of brands and styles of survival knives available. Find a good, quality one and keep it with your camping equipment at all times.

Quality lights are also important camping equipment. The most cost effective light is a LED flashlight or lantern. They last longer than the usual fluorescent or incandescent varieties and are more resistant to breaking. This is very important if you are camping deep in the forest where it will get darker quicker or if you will be hiking to your destination. Having a long-lasting, dependable LED lantern or flashlight will give families extra reassurance of safety. LED lighting products are sometimes more expensive than regular camping lights but their longevity and bright light make them a smart investment.
